Samsung and Google aren’t teammates in everything, it appears. Samsung is set to reveal its own Glass eyewear this September which will allegedly be called “Gear Glass”, a competitor to Google Glass.
The debut is expected to be held at Europe’s biggest electronic show, IFA 2014, in Berlin, Germany where the Tizen powered device will make an appearance.
It is said that the device will be both an eye-piece and an ear-piece meaning you can listen to music as well. Others are joining the glass trend as well with MS Glass found in Microsoft’s databases and LG filing for a “G Glass” trademark. Epson unveiled its glass product last month called the MOVERIO BT-100 and will officially introduce it at the end of this month.
It’s interesting to see Samsung introducing wearables lately with the “Gear” brand name instead of the popular Galaxy name, meaning they are most likely trying to branch off from Android completely. It appears Samsung is not shy about its ambitions to move more toward their own OS, Tizen. Whether this will pay off for them in the end is still to be determined. Google, even with its high price tag, seems to have a big lead on the glass category.
