Qualcomm is going to release a smartwatch chipset this year, report says
Samsung and Pebble are not the only one with a smartwatch in play. Qualcomm already has its offering in the smartwatch game, Qualcomm Toq, which Scott reviewed back in February. Qualcomm won’t stop there as far as wearables go, or so it seems.
Most of today’s smartwatches run on chips that are designed for smartphones, not smartwatches. That chipsets are trimmed down in order to work with smartwatches, that is true, but they’re not designed for that purpose. Aster is a chip designed for wearables (smartwatches included), designed by MediaTek, but that’s pretty much it, there’s a huge market for those kind of chips. Qualcomm is about to enter the game and offer a chip of its own according to Qualcomm CDMA Technologies Taiwan president Eddie Chang. We all know that one of the best processors in the mobile technology world comes from Qualcomm, their Snapdragon series is a real beast when it comes to performance.
This could certainly improve today’s wearable devices, it could do wonders for battery for example. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves, let us wait and see what will Qualcomm offer. Their SoC for wearable devices should be available later this year. We’ll inform you as soon as we know more.
