Plants vs. Zombies Watch Face review

As an official app from Electronic Arts, we had rather high expectations for a watch face based on Plants vs. Zombies. And why not? The wildly popular mobile game has racked up tens of millions of downloads on Android alone.

Thanks to a fun formula, a bunch of likable characters and creatures, and an easy to master premise, it’s an all-time classic.  How does the watch app fare?  Good, but certainly not great.

Alas, we were disappointed to find out that the Plants vs. Zombies watch face was very one-dimensional. Sure, it works on either square or round face displays, but the configuration stops there. Actually, it never gets started. Once you select the watch face, you’re done.

The clock is essentially the arms of the familiar and lovable lead zombie. That’s it. Indeed, the graphics are detailed and it looks every bit the part. Unfortunately, there’s nothing else.  We would love to see even one menu where we can change the zombie type. Or face.  Or, why not let us choose from the dozens of plants? One of the great things about the game is that there are so many little things to keep it fresh.

It’s hard to complain too loudly when you’re getting a free app or game. The same can be said for this watch face. Were we to pay a dollar or two for this one we’d definitely have a beef with Electronic Arts. But, considering it’s free, we’ve got to make an allowance.
