Pebble Firmware 2.5 is Released!

Typically these things come simply as bug-fixes, but this one is actually something really awesome. One word, EMOJI! Gone are the days when friends would send hearts, smilies, tears only to have it show up on my Pebble as a little box (□). For as long as the Pebble has been around and as much functionality as it has, this is the first proprietary change that makes alternative characters able to show.

Other that Emoji, 2.5 also comes with compass functionality as well as functionality for iOS 8 which released days ago. For iOS 8, 2.5 allows for better notification management such as the ability to clear notifications from the iOS Notification Center and they are cleared on the Pebble. This is fairly basic functionality but there is still something to say for the speedy update times and implementation of new phone OS functionality.

The compass functionality is important because all versions of the Pebble have a magnetometer built into the system, but no notable apps made use of it. The compass app that was uploaded to the Pebble Store on September 17th by Pebble Technology is, honestly one of the most beautiful apps I have seen. It “elegantly animates between two different modes: A compass rose when you look down … and a heading indicator when you hold the watch in front …” This is another step in the direction of actually getting the most out of our smart watches and cellphones
