Microsoft Band released in surprising fashion

We told you a few weeks ago that Microsoft had a smartwatch nearly ready for release, well we were kind of right.  Microsoft did indeed release a new device, but it is a fitness band instead of the smartwatch we thought.  In our defense, it is a pretty advanced fitness band.  We first learned of the impending release of the Microsoft Band from the various app stores, which released the companion apps hours before the Microsoft Band was officially released.

The Microsoft Band looks like it should be able to compete with the very best fitness bands.  Microsoft has packed just about everything you can think of inside the Band, including a full color screen and UV sensor which tells you how much sun you’re getting.  First and foremost, this is a fitness band:  You can use it running and the included GPS will keep track of your route without your smartphone.  The heart rate monitor in the band will keep track of your heart rate 24 hours a day.  You can also download fitness plans from partners like Golds Gym.

The Band isn’t limited to fitness needs though.  You can get notifications, create reminders and it allows you to link some customer accounts to Microsoft Health.  For example, you can link your Starbucks card so you can pay for your morning coffee with your Band.  The Microsoft Band will work with your favorite smartphone OS once you download the companion app.  The Band is available in three sizes and costs $199.  You can buy it directly from Microsoft.
