Intel unveils “Smart Shirt”

You read it right. Out of all the ways Intel could go in the wearable space, Intel looks to be going with shirts.

Intel’s head of new devices, Mike Bell, recently talked to Recode, saying that a Smart Shirt could change the way we perceive the very clothes we wear. Smart Shirt is made of “smart conductive fibers” which are used in conjunction with an Edison mini-computer and that can give users some biometric data. “You can get very accurate heart rate information just by wearing the shirt,” Said Bell, explaining the Smart Shirt. Talking about a Edison-based module he said, “This particular box, because it has Edison inside, can use both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. We could’ve built one with a 3G cellular chip.”

Intel has partnered with a clothing company AIQ in order to develop products using this platform. This technology could be rather useful. If, for instance, you want to monitor someone’s health you could do that this way and get regular notifications on your smartphone.

This is an interesting new concept and we certainly didn’t expect this. I have to admit this intrigues me a little bit. I can see potential for it, but what do you think?
