Google prepping Android Wear watch face API to foster development

Google is looking to do for Android Wear what it has done for Android all along: allow for rich customization at all levels. To that end, Google is working on an API that will allow for developers to create third party Android Wear watch faces. It’s not impossible today to create watch faces however it requires a bit of know-how and massaging.

We are working to make this as simple as possible for you so that it’s easy to make good-looking faces that work well across multiple form factors, conserve battery, and display the user’s card stream nicely. Some of these changes won’t be ready until we migrate Android Wear to the Android L release later this year, but don’t fret: they’re coming!

We can’t wait to see what sort of watch faces are created by the community once the tools are released. Here’s to the icon and widget community rallying behind a new cause!
